SAS Receives Its First Silicon Wafer — A Historic Step for Pakistan

Islamabad, October 2025 — South Asia Semiconductor (SAS) has officially received its first silicon wafer, marking a foundational moment in Pakistan’s semiconductor journey.

The wafer — a 4-inch, p-type silicon substrate — arrived at our R&D base in Islamabad this week. For most people, it may look like a small reflective disc. But for us, it represents the beginning of Pakistan’s move from consumers of technology to creators of it.

This wafer will serve as the foundation for SAS’s first round of hands-on R&D experiments, starting with resistors and simple transistor structures. Each test will help us build local capability — not just in theory, but in real fabrication practice.

“We’ve talked about semiconductors for years. Now, we’re touching silicon. This is where Pakistan’s chip industry truly begins.”
Toor Khan, Founder & CEO, South Asia Semiconductor

Why It Matters

For decades, Pakistan’s role in global technology has been limited to software and assembly. SAS aims to change that by developing local expertise in semiconductor manufacturing — from basic devices like transistors and MEMS sensors to future integrated circuits and memory chips.

The arrival of this wafer is more than a delivery; it’s a statement of intent. It shows that serious semiconductor work can start small — with discipline, vision, and persistence.

Next Steps

In the coming months, SAS will begin:

  • Experimental fabrication of resistive and doped structures on silicon.
  • Local collaboration with research labs for deposition and oxidation tests.
  • Training and documentation for students and engineers in semiconductor fundamentals.

SAS invites Pakistani universities, engineers, and partners worldwide to join this effort. The goal is not only to build devices — but to build capability.
